Code Switching- When you use 2 different types of language depending on the situation or who you are speaking to
Graphology
-written representation of speech i.e bold, italics, capitals, parentheses
Phonology
-clues to personality and mood
-we hear the speakers' idiolect (distinctive features of an individuals language use)
A pidgin or pidgin language is a simplified language that develops as a means of communication between 2 or more groups that do not have a language in common eg. the slaves in America who were all from different parts of Africa and therefore had different native languages to had to make up their own version of English in order to converse with one another
Convergence- where a speaker takes on some of the idiolectal aspects of another speaker ('sympathetic accent syndrome')
Accent- every speaker has their own accent although this will not always be made apparent within the transcripts. Accents can be a way of defining intelligence (brummy's are seen as thick and slow) and we are often stereotyped by our accent.
