Freud was an Austrian neurologist who later became known as the founding father of psychoanalysis. He started studying medicine in Vienna and after graduating he worked with Josef Breuer in treating 'hysteria by the recall of painful experiences under hypnosis'. After studying in Paris in 1885 he returned to Vienna and set up a private practice which specialised in nervous and brain disorders. He came up with the theory that sexual and aggressive impulses in humans are always in conflict with each other in order to be supreme. He started analysing himself in 1897 and in 1900 'The Interpretation of Dreams' was published which analysed dreams in 'terms of unconscious desires and experiences.' He died in 1939 after battling with cancer of the jaw for many years.
