The transformation of 'Northanger Abbey' by Val McDermid is set in modern day and in Edinburgh rather than in Bath. The use of informal language- especially when it come's to names- makes the text so different from the original by Jane Austin. For example, Catherine is referred to as 'Cat' and Mrs Allen is simply called 'Susie'. The reference to Facebook and Twitter makes the text seem very up to date and seems more realistic instead of the girls keeping 'journals'. In the transformation there is a greater description of Henry Tilney compared to the original. In the Jane Austin version he is simply described as ' rather tall... a very intelligent and lively eye, and if not quite handsome, was very near it.' In McDermid's version the description of his face and body goes to a greater depth and he is referred to as having the 'looks of a boy-band member' which gives the modern day reader an image which they know well. Both texts appeal to the audiences at the time they were written and the language used represents that.
